Winter 2018 Adult Classes

Fall classes are held at the Italian Cultural Center in Stone Park, Illinois.  Beginning through advanced classes meet for two hours, once a week for 12 weeks.

Adult Registration Fee: 

Beginning I, II

and Intermediate I

$250 if paid by January 26, 2018.  $300 if paid after January 26, 2018.  Book included –

Italian Made Simple Books will be available on the first day of class.

Only books purchased by January 31, 2018 will be available at the first class.

All Levels $220 if paid by January 26, 2018.  $270 if paid after January 26, 2018.  Book required but

not included.

ADULT CLASS DESCRIPTIONS

Beginning I Italian – Beginning I Italian This course offers basic Italian vocabulary and proper pronunciation.  Simple conversation will be taught and you will be presented with many of Italy’s geographical and cultural aspects including listening, reading and role playing.  Grammar coverage includes: singular and plural nouns, definite and indefinite  articles, adjectives, subject pronouns, adjective agreement, regular and irregular verbs.

PREREQUISITE:  NO PRIOR STUDY OF THE LANGUAGE PRESUMED.

Beginning II Italian – This course reinforces your basic knowledge of the Italian Language and grammar, Italian geography and culture.  You will improve your vocabulary, pronunciation, listening and speaking skills through the practice of new expressions, phrases, dialogues and role playing.  Grammar coverage includes:  possessive adjectives, prepositional contractions, regular and irregular verb conjugations, simple prepositions, interrogatives and demonstratives, disjunctive pronouns and past participles.

Intermediate I Italian – This course covers additional grammar, vocabulary, new phrases and expressions.  Students will continue improving their listening and speaking skills through videos cultural/geographical presentations and translations including dialogues and role playing.  Grammar coverage includes:  past participle, direct and indirect object pronouns, partitives and expression of quantity, adverbs, reflexive verbs and reciprocal reflexives.  This course starts at chapter 16 of textbook “Italian Made Simple.”

Intermediate II Italian – This course reinforces what has been learned in the previous level.  In addition, it continues introducing new grammar, vocabulary, new expressions, phrases, dialogues, cultural and geographical readings, translations, conversations, and role playing.  Grammar coverage includes: simple future, double object pronouns, formal and informal imperative, time expressions, comparatives of equality and inequality, superlatives, present and past conditional.

Advanced I Italian –  This course continues offering new grammar, vocabulary, expressions, phrases, dialogues, cultural and geographical readings, translations and conversations.  Grammar coverage includes: “Si” in the impersonal and “Si” in the passivante (passive voice) relative pronouns, indefinite adjectives and pronouns, negative expressions, infinitive constructions, non standard noun forms, the gerund and the progressive tenses, ordinal number and suffixes.

Advanced II Italian – This course covers advanced grammar, vocabulary and dialogues with advanced phrases and expressions, students will continue improving their listening and speaking skills through videos, cultural and geographical readings so that the student may read, write and converse on a higher level.  Grammar coverage includes: impersonal constructions, the present subjunctive, irregular present subjunctive, verbs that require the subjunctive, the past subjunctive, the subjunctive with conjunctions, the imperfect and the past perfect subjunctive, tense correlations with subjunctive.

Advanced 3 Conversation Italian – (Focus on culture, art, food and travel)… requirements, prior knowledge of advanced Italian. Student must have completed Sentieri (or equivalent) to at least chapter 10, and be somewhat fluent in the language.  In this class aside from completing and reviewing various exercises from Sentieri’s text and workbook, we will focus more on everyday conversation, verb usage, role-play common situations, view short films, read poetry,listen to music,and learn about the history of foods and wines… including some informal cooking demos in class!

Advanced Conversation Italian – Students will build conversation skills through focus on interactive class exercises and participation in local cultural events. The class will focus on various themes, for example restaurant, transportation, shopping and many more. The teaching style is based on the various media such as, magazines, television, film, etc.

Italian for Beginners and Travelers II – Italian for Travelers and Beginners learn basic pronunciation, how to ask questions, compose basic sentences, and get around Italy while traveling there. We will cover greetings, gender and number of nouns, basic verb conjugation, and some fun idiomatic expressions.  This class is a basic language course, perfect for those who wish to speak enough Italian to travel through Italy.  The book for this class can also be used to further your knowledge of Italian.

* To qualify for the early registration discount, your registration form and full payment must be received by the office no later than January 26, 2018.  Registrations sent by mail will be accepted if post marked by January 26, 2018 – no exceptions.

REFUND POLICY: Full course refund will be given if a course is dropped before the first class. If a course is dropped after the first class, but before the second class, 80% of the course will be refunded. No refunds will be given if the class is dropped after the second class. Books non-returnable and non-refundable.
